Every spring, the world’s finest golfers compete at one of the most pristine courses in the United States. Known as The Masters, this spectacular event is one of the most prestigious and challenging tournaments in golf.
The Masters dates back to 1934 when Bob Jones and Clifford Roberts dreamt of building an elite golf course in the South. They later decided that the course should host an annual tournament. In the early years, Jones felt that The Masters name was too presumptuous so the tournament was known as The Augusta National Invitational. It was not until 1938 that the name was changed to The Masters.
Today, The Masters continues to grow in popularity. It is the first of four major golf championships held every year and it is the only major held on the same course. Having a fixed location has given the event a continuity that is lacking in the other major tournaments and has led Augusta National to become one of the most revered golf courses in the world.
Augusta National is one of the most beautiful golf courses in part because of the abundant flowers and plants that grace the property. The course was constructed on a 265-acre former plant nursery. A great variety of plants and trees were found on the property and many have remained. Every hole on the course is named for a tree or shrub.
Whether you are walking across one of the three bridges dedicated to memorable tournament moments or are standing near one of the plaques dedicated to golf legends Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, you are surrounded by the tradition and legacy that embodies Augusta National.
